"The patterns, movement, rhythms, and unusual harmonies within spontaneous brushstrokes are what bring a painting to life." (B.R. Laycock)
Ready to let go of perfection and paint with your heart? In my new workshop, you'll learn to capture multiple flowers using a fast, loose, and intuitive approach. The workshop will not be about replicating what you see, but about painting what you feel.
In the main part of the workshop, we will explore the possibilities of the watercolor medium. We will discuss the levels of wetness of the watercolor paper and paint single flowers using the techniques of wet on dry, wet on wet, and without a preliminary sketch. An explanation about the lifting-out process is also included in this workshop.
The subjects will be some flowers found in the gardens during the fall season: the Rose At Last, known for its apricot orange blossoms, the Hydrangea and its pink and pomegranate-reds, the Heleniums and Sunflowers with their spectacular shades of yellow and orange, and the yellow-orange Chinese Lanterns with their miniature paper lantern look. A few more flowers can be included in the first session: Japanese Anemones, Sedum, Butterfly Bush, and Dahlia.
The second demo will be a closer look at the Rose At Last: we will paint a composition with multiple roses, and we will talk about the best fall mixings for foreground and background. An explanation about the rose, buds, and stems is included. I want to focus on capturing the overall feel and color of the rose rather than every detail.
The last demo will be about the copper colors depiction. I love to paint reflective surfaces as copper, gold, and silver, so this time I will use an old watering can that I bought a few of months ago in NY, in an antique shop. The first time I saw that piece, I thought, “I want to paint it,” so I purchased it and started studying the intricate play of reflections in an old reflective surface.
The copper demo will include a Chinese Lantern arrangement (it’s an autumn symbol, I have never painted it) and one or two pumpkins or squashes (as we are in the fall season). I want to explain how to use complementary colors (like orange and blue) to make certain elements stand out and how to use analogous colors to create a sense of unity.
Join me on a new painting journey where we'll celebrate the spirit of autumn through the rewarding process of intuition: let’s trust our instincts and embrace the unpredictable!
