“If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint” E. Hopper
- Do you know if the watercolor paper is too dry, wet enough, or too wet?
- Is it necessary to rewet the watercolor paper? How much water can we add to the paper?
- Do we need to wet the back of the paper? If positive, when and why?
- What’s the correct paint consistency if the watercolor paper is damp? Do we need to use undiluted paint or not?
- Once the paper is wet and the shine disappears, how can we control the application of watercolor paint?
- Are you afraid of making a brush stroke over a damp area?
- Do you know how to work on saturated paper? Do you soak the watercolor paper?
- Do you want to understand the right moment to add water, pigment, or lift out anything?
The answer to the last question is “TIMING” so yes, this workshop is a detailed lesson about understanding the wet-on-wet painting process.
The situation in which the watercolor paper surface areas are drying at different rates is what I call transitional degrees of wetness.
I want to use several flowers to demonstrate different approaches to wet-on-wet painting: they will be single flowers and I will repeat the same flower with a different amount of wetness and every participant will be encouraged to paint them along with me. After the first session, all participants can send the exercises to me and they will receive my feedback by email.
I will also demonstrate the soaked version: sometimes I immerse the watercolor paper under water in a clean bath (box) for a couple of seconds or minutes.
The final demo will be a mixed bouquet where we will talk about the different degrees of wetness that are necessary to add a particular effect.
This workshop will be more interactive as everyone can paint along with me and ask me about the wet-on-wet painting process.
So let’s welcome fall together?!
