“Nature is not only all that is visible, it also includes the inner pictures of the soul.” E. Munch
The brushstrokes are a way of conveying the primary message or intent of the painting so my new workshop is focused on the calligraphic elements that are part of my painting process: the lines, dots, brush marks, and abstract tiny shapes that I use to connect all aspects and unify the whole composition.
My paintings are built up with loose layered washes to create a suggestion of the subject. When I add lines and brush marks, I try to bring all the details into focus. If we overwork the calligraphic elements, the center of interest is lost so the correct amount of brush marks is one of the most difficult things in watercolor.
I will demonstrate some key points about brush holding, and how to use a relaxed grip rather than gripping the brush tightly. We will talk about line thickness, how I use the flat and the round brushes, the right radio of pigment and water, the “comma” brush stroke, the fingers and wrist positions, how the brush touches the paper and delivers pigment, and how to lift out pigment from the paper and suggest negative lines.
Fall is right around the corner, it’s my favorite season so far so I will paint some iconic fall subjects.
The first subject will be fall leaves. This time we will focus on the branch of leaves: we will talk about the leaf veins, how to suggest them, and how to use those lines to emphasize the leaf structure.
The main demo will be a detailed explanation of trees, foliage, trunks, and branches: I will demonstrate a fall landscape, the trunk textures, the trunk grooves, the horizontal and vertical brushstrokes that are part of the tree structure, the grass and the landscape dry textures. I want to demonstrate a tree with white barks like the birch tree.
The last demo will be a sunflower demo. This time I want to focus on the sunflower buds. They look like stars, they embrace the yellow petals and it’s an excellent opportunity to work with calligraphic brush strokes. The elongated sunflower petal with its subtle texture will also be painted in this workshop. An explanation of stem placement is also included.
This workshop was requested by many workshop participants: a close-up look at the painting's brush strokes with an emphasis on how to explore the endless brush possibilities. It’s unique, it’s a workshop about the foundation of a painting and won’t be repeated.
- Do you know how to add expressive brush strokes?
- Do you know how to paint clean, smooth, and confident lines?
- Do you know how to represent an interest variation in line quality?
- Do you know how to use lines and brush marks to emphasize the focal point?
