Clear glass and crystal are never completely colorless. They act like prisms, capturing, bending, and reflecting the colors around them. In my new workshop, we will look beyond the surface to find the hidden colors inside transparent objects. Together, we will practice seeing and painting the warm glows, cool refractions, and subtle color changes that make clear objects sparkle.
Background washes, soft color bleeds, and bright cast shadows can naturally shape the vases. Instead of using stiff outlines, we will focus on how shadows can create a sense of volume and weight.
For the first time, I will demonstrate painting a clear crystal piece, a subject that requires particular attention. To achieve success without becoming constrained by rigid detail, it is essential to abstract the facets and allow the watercolor to move freely. Instead of focusing solely on line work, we will approach the crystal vase as a composition of contrasting value shapes, similar to assembling a jigsaw puzzle.
In my first demonstration, I will feature three clear glass vases illuminated by different light sources/ angles. I aim to illustrate how light alters the perception of volume and weight, and how shadows and negative space can be used to suggest the form of the vase.
The second demonstration will involve a clear glass vase containing a sweet pea bouquet. We will examine the enchanting, fluttering form of the sweet pea: naturally abstract and cloud-like, this delicate flower provides an ideal subject for practicing suggested shapes instead of rigid detail.
The final and primary demonstration will feature a clear crystal vase with flowers. As autumn approaches, I will paint sunflowers, lavenders, and snapdragons. I will explore the principles behind creating 'the sparkle' and demonstrate techniques for achieving a subtle, physical texture that effectively mimics the substantial quality of cut crystal.
