“A cottage garden says “come in, wander, stay awhile". It’s freewheeling, not formal”…Its abundance may be what you notice first: vines clamber up porch posts, roses twine across arbors…" (S. Heeger)
What could be more revigorating than perching on a bench surrounded by different flowers?
This new workshop is focused on flowers, the foundation of my work but this time I want to visit a cottage garden and paint different flowers step by step and one composition with flowers, greens, and a romantic bench.
I will paint 4 different watercolors in the first session: the fabulous bell-shaped Foxgloves, the delicate Hollyhocks, the challenging white Delphinium, and the composition with flowers and bench.
A few more flowers can be included in the first or second session: Aquilegia, Lupine, Lily of the Valley, and/or Rose. Most of them I haven’t painted yet in my previous workshops.
I like to work with hard and soft edges and the way I save or restore the white of the paper identifies my artwork so I will emphasize how to add more or less water to the painting process and the right moment to lift out pigment and add more contrast. It’s about timing and experience and I want to share it with everyone.
I will demonstrate, step by step, how to draw each flower, my color mixing for each one, how to suggest the overlapping petals, and how the background can relate visually to the subject in the foreground.
The bench explanation will include some additional info about perspective, paper’s choice (cold/hot or rough paper), mixing greens, and composition.
This workshop is a two days format: the second day will be a mentoring session. You can send one painting to my email from May 10 to 13 (by morning). I will clear your questions and provide some feedback about your paintings on May 13 (the second session). One more demo is scheduled for the second session: a small bouquet of Sweet Peas.
Would you like to visit a cottage garden with me and paint loose florals and landscapes? So join my next painting adventure!
