"You can’t build a great building on a weak foundation…"
G.B.Hinckley
My new workshop is focused on flower painting, negative painting, and also the lifting out technique without a preliminary sketch but now I want to add a new topic that I have never taught previously: the steps of my painting technique.
I will demonstrate 16 key exercises about color mixing, the physical quality of the pigment, the paper wetness (dry, damp, or wet), the flow painting effects, the liting out effects, the best colors for lifting out, edges, value control, negative painting, brush strokes, and angles, lines, wash intensity and more.
We will paint together the 16 steps: all participants will be encouraged to paint them along with me. After the workshop, all participants can send the exercises to me and they will receive my feedback about it. I want to improve my feedback: sometimes a few foundation mistakes can ruin our final work so let’s talk about how to improve the basic steps to create a loose work.
I will demonstrate multiple flowers during the first day, some of them without any preliminary sketch: the beautiful Peony, the delicate Forget-Me-Not, the colorful Iceland Poppy, the vibrant Sunflower, and the iconic Sweet Pea.
We will also talk about positive shapes and negative painting: the lifting out process creates powerful positive shapes and if we add more contrast to the background we are working with negative space or with the background so yes, this workshop is about the background and how to use it to enhance the foreground.
Let’s face the challenge together. Painting without a preliminary sketch is rewarding, we have to portray the subject fast and loosely!
