“For an Impressionist to paint from nature is not to paint the subject, but to realize sensations” P. Cezanne
One of the world’s most beautiful gardens, Claude Monet’s Garden, in Giverny, France is the main subject of my new workshop.
His garden was a source of inspiration to him and is still a feast for any artist’s senses: there are many exceptional flowers like peonies, daffodils, delphiniums, foxgloves, roses, clematis among others but there are also many wild and small flowers everywhere.
During my last visit to Giverny, last month, I spent a couple of days in Vernon, France, and could visit Giverny many times. I immersed myself in Monet’s Garden and noticed so many different flowers like the Salvia flower, the wild Wallflower, the Floss flower, and the Gum Rose, for example.
This time I want to paint not only peonies or roses (iconic flowers from Giverny) but also colorful flowers that were also part of Monet’s inspiration.
We will discover, together, step by step, how to simplify every flower, depict light, and create a strong contrast between warm and cool colors: I want to enhance the impressionist approach.
I want to paint six different flowers, including the lily pond: the water garden became the main obsession of Monet’s later career and the subject of some 250 paintings.
I have been to Giverny many times, it’s part of my background as a watercolor artist, the garden’s colors and diversity have strongly influenced my approach to loose and spontaneous florals so I‘d love to share with you my experience one more time!
