“Always plan. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark”(R. Cushing)
My new workshop is focused on compositional choices, flower painting, and perspective but this time I want to change the workshop agenda a little bit: since 2020 I have taught almost 170 online workshops and you’ve asked me many questions about my painting process so this time my workshop demos will clear your previous questions.
I want to show a detailed look at the steps to create a cohesive flower painting and the participant’s questions are an excellent way of putting it all together. Let me show a few examples to you (yes, I took notes of all your questions):
-How do I know when I need to start with wet paper or dry?
-How much do you draw?
-Why do you need hard in soft edges in watercolor?
-How can we lift out pigment without destroying the paper?
-How much pigment and water should I use?
-What’s the best way to mix colors?
-How can I suggest shapes overlapping?
-How to blend watercolors?
-Why do you use so many lines in your watercolors? Is there a particular reason?
-Why does watercolor paper move and buckle when I paint on it?
-Why do you mention that “less is more”?
-Can you show me what’s wrong with my perspective?
-And……… and…..why?
I can show more than one hundred questions here, by the way your questions are excellent. Instead of it, I will reply to all questions with my work: if I demonstrate several flowers, just small samples, I will be able to reply to all questions using my brush, my colors and my paper.
I also want to hear the participants’ questions during the first day demos so I might paint many different flowers: the number of demos will depend on your questions but I plan to show between 8 and 12 different flowers.
After the flower samples and question session I will paint a still-life composition: a tea cup with flowers and a teapot. I will reply to more questions about composition, background, and shapes connection. I want to paint it and describe in detail my painting process so instead of multiple demos I want to focus on one elaborate demo and explain all my compositional choices.
I will show sketches, drawings, and compositional studies about the tea cup demo: you will understand how to suggest a porcelain cup with tea, how perspective can enhance your composition, how the light source affects the whole composition and how to connect flowers and other elements in a still life composition.
This workshop is different and unique. I won't launch Episode 2 or 3: I don’t repeat subjects so everyone is more than welcome to join a detailed view of my painting process!
