"One hopes that each piece contains enough space for several narratives.”
V. Smith
My new workshop is focused on negative painting, one of the most powerful ways to improve the background and composition.
Positive space is a subject itself. The negative space is the area around your subject so the negative space can be used to create shapes and designs that complement the main subject: painting the negative space helps you to pay attention to the background and see the unseen.
I will make multiple flower demonstrations with an emphasis on background: we will map the background, and talk about the value change and how to connect the background and foreground: although negative and positive spaces work together, we will make a few exercises to focus on the background only, we will look for shape diversity, movement and contrast in the background.
Painting and drawing the negative spaces enables you to make a cognitive shift from the left hemisphere of your brain to your right hemisphere so let’s talk about it too.
This workshop is about composition, background, flowers (individual flowers and a group of flowers), and negative painting so you are more than welcome to join my new artistic journey!

- Do you know the difference between negative and positive spaces in watercolor?
- Do you use negative space as a tool to create shapes that complement the main subject of your painting?
- How can the negative space improve the sense of depth and dimension in your paintings?
- Do you know how to create a connecting bridge between negative and positive spaces?
- Did you know that the negative space will frame the main shape so it’s about understanding the background work?
