“The flower that follows the sun does so even on cloudy days”
R. Leighton
This new online workshop is focused on flowers, the foundation of my work: I want to explore different flower shapes, petal arrangements, color mixing and develop expressive ways of depicting them.
I will paint 6 different watercolors in the first session: the colorful Lupine, the delicate Phlox, the long flowering Delphinium, the bell-shaped white Snowflake, the iconic Prinz Heinrich Japanese Anemone, and the highly fragrant Sweet Pea.
A few more flowers can be included in the first or second session: Aquilegia, Bluebells, Hardy Geranium, and/or Rose. Most of them I haven’t painted yet in my previous workshops.
I like to work with hard and soft edges and the way I save or restore the white of the paper identifies my artwork so I will emphasize how to add more or less water to the painting process and the right moment to lift out pigment and add more contrast. It’s about timing and experience and I want to share it with everyone.
I will demonstrate, step by step, how to draw each flower, my color mixing for each one, how to suggest the overlapping petals, and how the background can relate visually to the subject in the foreground.
A brief description of different watercolor papers is included this time: I want to demonstrate how the paper texture affects the final painting. Let’s compare, for example, the same flower painted on cold-pressed and rough paper, for example.
This workshop is a two days format: the second day will be a mentoring session. You can send one painting to my email from April 26 to 29 (by morning). I will clear your questions and provide some feedback about your paintings on April 29 (the second session). One more demo is scheduled for the second session!
Would you like to learn how to paint flowers wet on wet, loose, with a powerful background and strong lifting out effects using the white of the paper?
Join my workshop and let’s celebrate springtime painting…flowers!
