“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” P.Picasso
Fruits and vegetables are traditional subjects for still life painting because they feature a variety of colors, textures, values, and shapes that can challenge any artist. My new workshop is focused on painting them with an emphasis on mixing vibrant colors without making them muddy.
I will paint different subjects in terms of colors and skin textures:
As you can see, we will talk about different skin colors and different colors that will be used in each demo. An explanation about how to avoid muddy colors is included so we will speak of foreground/background colors, color wheel, complementary and analogous colors, and neutral grays for backgrounds and shadows.
Do you struggle with adding layers to the paper when it is still wet? The concept of delivering pigment to the wet paper will be also explained. So it’s your chance to see how I control the pigment delivery to the wet paper without destroying the whole work with unexpected blooms and marks!

I will paint different subjects in terms of colors and skin textures:
- The White Garlic is a wonderful subject to practice how to save the white of the paper to represent its skin.
- Onions and their thin, lightweight, and translucent skin, are a challenge for any visual artist.
- The Avocado and the subtle mixing of yellow and green for its flesh.
- The beautiful Red Peppers and their red skin. Mixing strong and vibrant reds is another challenge for any watercolor artist.
- Pumpkins or Squash. There’s a variety of Squash skin colors and textures. The Pumpkin is an iconic subject for any Fall workshop.
- The Serviceberry (also called Juneberries or Saskatoon berries) are colorful, and it’s a great opportunity to talk about shape connection and edge variety. Berries are always associated with the Fall season too.
