Capturing a convincing water reflection requires avoiding overthinking or overworking the surface. This process demands a fast, loose approach. Painting with confidence, trusting the wetness of the paper, and allowing pigment to mingle unpredictably are essential.The unique qualities of watercolor reflections often emerge through unexpected outcomes, such as a soft bloom or a spontaneous run of color. My new workshop is designed to explore various types of watercolor reflections.
I will use the dramatic fjord reflections as subjects for my first demonstrations. Fjords are long, narrow sea inlets with steep rock cliffs. We can see how the dark, still, deep water acts as a giant mirror. Let’s understand how to represent the mirror reflection in three seasons: summer, early fall, and early winter.
When September arrives in the northern hemisphere, trees shift from green to bright reds, oranges, and yellows. As the green fades, other colors in the leaves appear. It’s a magical time, so for my second demo, we’ll take a virtual trip to Giverny in the fall. We’ll paint Monet’s pond with autumn colors and explore which mixes best capture the season’s mood.
To further study water reflections, we will also focus on water lilies, which are iconic flowers found in Monet’s garden in Giverny. Often considered the jewel of the pond, water lilies are rooted in the mud yet float gracefully on the surface, connecting the earthy depths with the open air. We will explore how to depict water lily blooms on the water’s surface.
This workshop will address landscape painting, landscape reflections, mirror effects, water reflections, loose landscapes, fall colors, Giverny, flowers, and techniques for mixing colors to suggest seasonal moods. This unique blend of subjects offers a comprehensive exploration, and I invite you to join my next painting adventure.
