“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”

The Holiday Season is approaching so my new workshop is focused on how to simplify many flowers associated with the holidays. Some berries and foliage are also included.
As it’s the only workshop about Holiday Flowers, I want to include an explanation about how to simplify each flower, how to portray the essentials of the subject, and what we can do to create a powerful composition with only one flower.
We will talk about composition, bold and loose brush strokes, how to avoid overworking, and how to capture the movement through the composition.
I will paint on a small scale, 1/8, so all subjects can be used to create a holiday card, for example. I also want to challenge myself (and everyone): I will try to paint 9 different subjects in the same workshop or 9 different flowers.
For the first time I want to paint the Cactus Flower, there‘s a complex and stunning flower shape in every cactus plant so it might be the main demo. We will also paint Amaryllis (2 colors Amaryllis), Snowdrops, Hellebore (or Christmas Rose), Paperwhite, Wintergreen, the Tears of Christ (Clorodendrum Thomsoniae), Red Carnations, and the Poinsettia. A few more demos can be included: the Rosemary (Christmas Herb), the Red Rose, and the Holy.
This workshop is about subject simplification so I will paint only one flower per demo. I want to demonstrate different shapes and explore the colors red and white. In my opinion, the red color is a tricky one, we need to understand how to work with shades of red to suggest depth and volume. And the white flower is about working with the white of the paper, the most powerful white in watercolor painting.
So let’s brighten the holiday season! We will discover the joy of painting flowers together!

- Do you know how to simplify a complex subject?-Can you work in different scales (a holiday card or a full imperial sheet)?
- Have you ever heard that the composition looks too busy?
- Do you know how to create a strong focal point? Where is the focal point if we paint only one flower?
- Do you know when to stop? Or when should you ask yourself “What more can I do”?
- Have you ever heard the expression “less is more” in watercolor? Or do you know how to work with fewer effective brush strokes?
- What do loose brush strokes mean? Can we use the same brushes on different scales?
- What’s the secret of painting loosely? Can we mention the composition?
