"These landscapes of water and reflections have become an obsession. It's quite beyond my powers at my age, and yet I want to succeed in expressing what I feel." C. Monet

Join me for a new painting workshop that focuses on capturing the visual transition between late fall and early winter. We'll explore how to transition from a warm, vibrant palette to a muted, cool one, all while exploring the beautiful world of reflections.

Our virtual journey will take us to iconic parks in the U.S. and Canada during this special time of year.

* First Demo: Fall in Yosemite. Our first stop is Yosemite National Park in California. We'll focus on the vibrant autumn foliage of Big-Leaf Maples, Black Oaks, and Dogwoods, as well as the powerful contrast they create against the park's evergreen trees. The park's rivers, lakes, and even the glaciated granite mountains will serve as natural mirrors, reflecting these colors and creating stunning opportunities for composition.

* Second Demo: The Mood of the Canadian Rockies. Next, we'll travel to the high mountain peaks and glacial lakes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Here, we'll depict the majestic, visually striking peaks that are a central feature of the Rockies, characterized by their rugged, rocky, and snow-capped summits. This demo will be all about capturing the in-between season mood—the colors and atmosphere that define the beginning of winter.

* Third Demo: Painting Snow and Light. As we fully transition into winter, our third demo will focus on painting snow. I will choose a third national park view, and we'll discuss how to use cool, desaturated colors for shadows and light. We will learn to leave areas of white paper for highlights and apply paint in layers with varied brushstrokes to give snow depth and form, avoiding the look of a flat, white blanket.

As an extra challenge, I'll be painting snowberries for the first time. This resilient shrub is known for its showy white berries that remain on bare branches well into winter. Since the berries are almost white, this will be a great opportunity to talk about how to save and work with the white of the paper.

I hope you'll join me on this workshop journey! With December approaching and the holiday season upon us, you can use these techniques and references and start painting your own holiday cards.
