- Have you ever struggled with background darks?
- What colours, when mixed together, will produce realistic shadows?
- What is the way in which we can simulate the colour black without using a black pigment?
- Is it true that fall colors are only warm, or is it possible to change the temperature sometimes?
My new brand workshop will focus on creating deep, bold darks without overworking them, and, as we are in the fall season, I will explore color combinations from the autumn spectrum.
The workshop will start with a demonstration on how to mix dark colors without using any black or grey pigments; I will share some of my preferred mixes for dark tones, including those associated with the autumn season. I intend to paint, for the first time, a blackberry known as the Virginia creeper, which is a climbing plant and produces small, hard-to-see green flowers in the summer. By late summer or autumn, the flowers become small, dark blue or black berries, with stunning fall leaves.
The second section of the workshop will focus on one of my principal topics: roses and their background connections. I want to explore the flower's shape using warm colors to depict autumn shades, with varying degrees of wetness. I plan to paint individual roses in small formats, providing detailed guidance on using a dark background to give the flower form.
For the third demo I would like two small bouquets consisting of autumn flowers, leaves and berries; the aim is to examine the relationships between the different elements (such as between the berries and the flowers), and they will also be on a small scale.
The fourth demo will feature a small porcelain vase filled with fall hydrangeas and berries. We'll discuss still-life arrangement, selecting colors for autumn backgrounds, composition, and where to place shadows. I will also explain shadow colors.
Fall is my favorite season. I enjoy the rich, bold shades of this time of year, so I would like to focus on small formats and provide as many references as possible. We're approaching the holiday season, and it's coming on quickly, so that you will have plenty of references for your holiday cards!
