“The right use of color can make any composition work.” F. Porter
My new workshop is also focused on negative painting, one of the most powerful ways to improve the background and composition.
Positive space is a subject itself. The negative space is the area around your subject so the negative space can be used to create shapes and designs that complement the main subject: painting the negative space helps you to pay attention to the background and see the unseen.
This is the second and final part about the negative painting technique: now I want to explore more subjects like bikes, landscapes, old street lamps, and other architectural elements.
I will talk about different color combinations for background and foreground and show three background color combinations for the same subject. Let's explore color theory, temperature, and contrast.
I also want to demonstrate the glazing technique: we can enhance the depth of painting by layering diluted watercolor in the background. It's another approach to negative painting.
This workshop is about composition, background, landscapes, bikes and old street lamps, glazing, color theory, and negative painting. You are welcome to join my new artistic journey!
- Do you know the difference between negative and positive spaces in watercolor?
- How can the negative space improve the sense of depth and dimension in your paintings?
- Do you know how to create a connecting bridge between negative and positive spaces?
- How to contrast background and foreground colors?
- Do you know how to push the background back?
- Have you ever tried the watercolor glazing technique?
