“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” (Pablo Picasso)
Creating a good flower composition isn’t just about throwing together flowers you like. It’s about understanding the roles each flower plays in its overall composition and how to create soft transitions between the focal flowers. So, my new workshop is focused on small flowers and greenery that are used as fillers in flower bouquets.
How can we fill out the spaces between the focal elements without overworking the whole composition? It’s a challenging subject requested by many participants. Hence, it’s a workshop about greenery mixing, background, the supporting elements of the composition, and how to add little details and create movement by breaking up dense flower compositions and drawing the viewer in for a closer look.
In floral compositions, the background creates context and allows the focal flowers to shine: the foliage and the filler flowers provide structure, fill space, and add transitional elements between different flowers and colors.
I will start the workshop with an explanation about the foliage or greenery used as a backdrop to highlight the main flowers. I will share with all participants my previous sketches about foliage and paint three (3) different examples. Foliage options: myrtle, ivy, leather fern, tree fern, dusty miller, lemon leaf, eucalyptus, or honey bracelet.
The second demo will be about filler flowers: they are small flowers and quite exciting on their own but when paired with other flowers they can complement the whole composition. I will paint three (3) different examples. Flower filler options: stock, lavender, delphinium, baby’s breath, statice, or snapdragons.
After exploring the fillers we will paint four (4) different bouquets. They will be small bouquets (posy): I want to keep them as simple as possible so we can add different fillers to each bouquet and practice the connection between the focal flowers and the background. Flowers (focal point blooms) that are included in this workshop: roses, peonies, daffodils, poppies, daisies, sunflowers, calla lilies, hydrangeas, or white Japanese anemones.
It’s a brand new workshop, I never taught a workshop about fillers and connecting shapes (small flowers and greenery), and unfortunately, due to my time availability, it won’t be repeated. You are more welcome to join my new painting adventure!
