Have you learned how to make a watercolor background that looks smooth and blended?

Have you ever seen a beautiful painting lose its magic when the background becomes dull or heavy-handed?

Do you ever pause, uncertain how to weave leaves and greenery into your backgrounds with boldness?

Can you imagine leaves and greenery in unexpected colors and playful arrangements, or do you find yourself reaching for the same green and shapes each time?

Before you can reinvent a shape, it helps to understand what makes it special. In my new workshop, we will look closely at the hidden structure of greenery, especially the 'skeleton' of leaves and stems that hold up a floral arrangement. By learning about proportions and growth patterns, you will be able to paint greenery more freely and with confidence. First, you will learn the basics, and then you will find creative ways to break the rules.

How do greenery and floral backgrounds work together? When you paint leaves and greenery accurately, they enhance the background and connect the edges of the flowers to the whole composition. For example, if you paint leaf shapes that blend into the background on one side but stay sharp where they touch a petal, you help anchor the flower in the space.

The first demo will be a series of sketches focusing on flower leaves. We will look at leaf shapes, perspective, folds, how to suggest veins and orientation, the direction of growth, using single brush strokes, and how to show greenery as a background element.

The second demo will feature a rose, but this time I want to highlight the rose’s leaves as part of the composition. The leaves often start out reddish or purple before turning green, which is a normal part of their growth. We can use these different colors to make the flower composition more interesting.

Another demo will be a single peony with its compound, deeply lobed leaves. The peony is a beautiful and complex flower, but this time I will focus on brush strokes that suggest the leaves instead of adding too many details that might distract from the flower. This could be a demo for the second session, and I will confirm during the first session.

The main demo will feature another iconic flower, and possibly one of the trickiest I have ever painted: the wisteria. We will study its shape, the best color combinations (since wisteria has a unique color), and how to compose it as a hanging flower. I will also add leaves to the final piece so we can see how to balance the purple shades of the wisteria with the soft greens of the leaves.

I invite you to experience my brand new workshop, where we will explore the intricate shapes of leaves for the very first time, paint loose and vibrant backgrounds, and celebrate three of nature’s most stunning blooms: the rose, the peony, and the wisteria. Let’s paint the beautiful Spring colors together!
