I am frequently asked the same question: Why do you have flowers as your main subject? Flowers represent the cycle of life; you can see the birth, the grow, the budding, the flowering, the ending of the bloom, the seeds, and the rebirth. It’s a live subject, but if you are not able to capture the shape, movement, and 3-dimensionality of any flower, you will paint fake flowers, not real ones. So my new workshop is focused on understanding the structural sketching of different flower shapes.
Sketching flowers become much easier by breaking them down into geometric shapes like circles, ovals, cones and cylinders but this time I want to move further and share a brief guide to the different flower types and shapes:
1-Cup or Saucer (examples: Apple Blossom, Poppy);
2-Daisy (examples: Sunflower, Anemone);
3-Trumpet (examples: Bell Flower, Daffodil);
4-Plume (examples:Prince’s Plume, Solidago);
5-Globe (examples: Geranium, Allium Flower);
6-Flathead (examples: Verbena, Dill);
7-Filler (examples: Baby’s Breath, Sea Lavender);
8-Spike (examples: Foxgloves, Salvia);
9-Cluster (examples: Lilac, Panicle Hydrangea).
I will demonstrate 9 quick sketches (9 different shapes) during session one and two. I want to show how to simplify and depict different shapes. We will also talk about the petal arrangements (single, curved and double), the flower inflorescence (solitary, cluster, spike, etc), the flower orientation (erect, nodding, pendent) and how to draw the same flower in different positions.
Cherry blossoms mark the arrival of spring, a season of new beginnings and rebirth so my main demo will be a cherry blossom arrangement.
We will identify the geometric patterns described in the first 9 demos, including the differences between the early stages of blooming and the full bloom. A detailed explanation about the petals shape, the buds suggestion and the composition is included.
This is an immersive workshop about understanding the shapes before adding water and pigment, how to draw flower shapes with your brush strokes, the role of the shape variety to make a cohesive composition and how to paint and a soft but also powerful cherry blossom composition. It’s a step by step workshop about the foundation of my floral painting, a new brand tutorial so hopefully you can join it!
