"Painting is the passage from the chaos of the emotions to the order of the possible” Balthus
The way I start my paintings looks a bit intuitive and sometimes it seems a bit chaotic too. I want to paint as loose as possible so add color and pigment everywhere but I have a clear visualisation of the finished painting structure.
Do you know why?
It’s because I have already studied the subject in detail. I have depicted the shape exhaustively, checked all light and shade possibilities and changed the point of view many times.
This time I will demonstrate how I simplify the flower shapes. I will paint 6 different flowers in different positions before the workshop. One day before the first session I will send my flower studies to all participants so everyone will understand what I call the shape depiction.
During the live session, I will paint 6 flowers (6 different watercolors), only one flower position, a simplified version of what I sent one day before.
Anyway, any new subject can look a bit intimidating, and we can represent it chaotically for the first time, it’s part of the creative process. I think we need both chaos and order to thrive. Chaos pushes us up to grow, forcing us to step outside of our comfort zones and take risks.
I will paint some special flowers (some of them I have never painted during the online workshops): Geranium Rozane, California Poppy, Cornflower, Peony, Lavender and Rose.
What else? It’s June, the high season of lavender in France is June/July so the last demo will be a quick landscape with the lavenders in the foreground. The simplified shapes will be part of the landscape painting.
- Have you ever created a painting that looks too busy, too messy, or without order?
- Do you know how to simplify everything into shapes?
- Is simplification the key to master form?
