“The eye is always caught by light, but shadows have more to say.”
G. Maguire
Shadows can turn an otherwise flat, boring, and uninteresting painting into a composition that pops and attracts the viewer's attention. It’s a tricky subject, a wrong shadow can destroy any good work so yes, my new workshop is focusedon exploring and capturing the right balance of light and shadow.
Sometimes the patterns of light and shadows can be so compelling that they become to focal point of the painting and the shadows can reveal the strength of the light, what type of day it is, the season (if it’s winter or summer, for example) and the direction of the light source.
This time I also want to start the workshop with a few small quick watercolors about shadows (6 small and fast demos): we will talk about direction, color choice, mixing ratio, local color, cast shadows, shadows values, reflected light, shadows edges, etc. The small watercolor subjects subjects will be flowers, windows, flower boxes, chairs, etc.
The second demo, the ma demo, will be a balcony or a doorway from France with different shadow shapes. We will explore different color combinations to fit the summer/ spring mood.
What else? I want to offer a fully immersive experience in each workshop so the last demo will be a quick demo with shadows and light. Everyone is welcome to repeat the same small demo and send his/her attempt to my email. I will reply to all emails with my opinion about the shadow work. Let’s see if we can finally understand, together, how to add a powerful and appealing shadow.
As usual, this workshop is unique, it’s only about shadows and won’t be repeated so, let’s create the illusion of our 3-dimensional world on the flat surface of the watercolor paper!
