"Glazing is the artist's secret to creating atmospheric depth and the convincing play of light and shadow." (Unknown)

Shadows in watercolor can be incredibly elusive. Many artists struggle with getting the right water-to-pigment ratio for believable darks, and it's often a mystery how perspective truly dictates their shapes. These hurdles can make painting light and shade feel like guesswork.

We'll explore the rules of perspective to understand exactly how they influence shadow forms. You'll also gain a clear understanding of pigment and water ratios to create rich, luminous shadows without muddiness. Most importantly, you'll discover how the versatile glazing technique becomes your most effective tool for building depth, suggesting light, and rendering nuanced shade with confidence and control.

Our workshop begins with perspective. You'll learn to apply the fundamental rules of the horizon line, vanishing points, and converging lines to understand how depth is created. During a live demonstration of a European staircase, you'll see my entire process, from the first sketch marks, allowing you to grasp how perspective dictates every line.

Next, we will understand the power of glazing. This highly effective technique involves layering transparent watercolors to build rich shadows and incredible depth. You'll discover how a well-executed glaze can be the key to achieving luminous shadows that breathe life into your paintings.

We'll explore this through several glazing sketches and two comprehensive painting demonstrations, where we'll integrate all the perspective and glazing principles we've covered. I'll also explain the perspective of stone walls, ensuring every element in your composition aligns seamlessly.

This brand-new workshop covers essential topics like composition, perspective, glazing, shadows, wall texture, stonewalls, depth, flowers, and foliage. We'll work from inspiring photos I took in France last summer. Join me for this exciting new painting adventure!
