“Every time I paint the sea, I feel driven to paint it just as it is, yet I know that that is impossible." Claude Monet
The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), also known as Highway 1 in California, is more than just a road; it's a breathtaking journey through some of the most dramatic and diverse coastal scenery imaginable. So, my new workshop is focused on capturing the unique atmosphere and beauty of that coast.
I want to paint the soft, diffused light filtering through the mist, the powerful movement of the ocean as waves meet the shore and the rocks, the freedom of the seagulls against the vast sky, and the cheerful bursts of orange from the poppies. Yes, the California poppies are frequently found in and near coastal areas.
The first demo will be a scenic view of the California Coast, showcasing a blend of natural elements: a sandy beach where the turquoise water gently laps against the shore. An explanation about waves and moving water is included, and we will talk about rocks and pebbles found on the coast and how light play across the uneven surfaces, creating highlights and shadows.
Along the California coast, the bright poppies often bloom in unexpected places, creating vivid splashes of color against the coastal scenery, particularly under the strong sunlight, so the second demo will be about the striking contrast between the warm poppies and the cool blues and greens of the California coastline.
The following demo will be another view of the California Coast: we will paint a seagull in its natural habitat along a rocky California beach. It’s a great opportunity to talk about negative painting, as the natural environment can work as a powerful background for the seagulls.
The last and main demo will be about capturing the misty atmosphere around: we will talk about how to achieve those soft, indistinct edges characteristic of misty and foggy scenes. The mist obscures the distant views, softens the lines of the road and the surrounding vegetation, with the light filtering through so it’s an excellent opportunity to practice the wet on wet technique and how to control the ratio between water and pigment.
Having experienced the Pacific Coast Highway firsthand a couple of times, I can attest to its breathtaking beauty and renowned status as a road trip. I'm eager to share my passion for this incredible part of the world. It offers a unique opportunity for artists to capture diverse subjects, including landscapes, seascapes with dynamic waves, the motion of water, dramatic rocks and cliffs, the anatomy of seagulls, vibrant flowers and fields, captivating color combinations, and the atmospheric effects of mist and fog.
