"Every artist dips his brush in his soul, and paints his nature into his pictures." H W Beecher
My new workshop is focused on mixing colors but this time I won’t use my palette, I will mix pigments directly on the paper!
Many artists have asked me how I decide how much pigment and water I will use, or what is the right brush pressure on the paper so my answer is: it’s everything about mixing pigments on the paper (instead of spending a lot of time mixing colors on the palette). It’s about timing, again, and it’s about playing with the unpredictability.
If I mix colors on the paper I will need to pay attention to the paper's wetness and which colors I will use to achieve a certain mood. Mixing on the paper creates a subtle blending as the pigments interact and create soft transitions and color variations.
This workshop subject is a challenge so we will paint many individual flowers together, mixing pigments on the paper, and then I will demonstrate a small bouquet with different flowers.
Flowers included in this workshop: crocus, daffodils, roses, daisies, English primroses, red and pink anemones, and/or winter jasmine.
This workshop is about mixing colors, painting flowers, loose and intuitive approach to floral painting, the wetness of the paper, lifting out techniques, and how to achieve a powerful composition by working with soft edges.
Have you ever noticed that I mix the colors on the paper (not on my palette)? If not, it's your chance to see it!
- Do you know how to blend the colors on the wet paper?
- Do you have confidence in your color mixing or do you just rely on your intuition?
- Do you know how to stop your watercolor from getting muddy and overworked?
