“There is no blue without yellow and orange.” V. Van Gogh.
Have you ever been painting and thought: "These colors just aren’t working for me, my work looks flat and boring"?
Sometimes, we try to replicate the subject’s colors, and it does not work at all. So why not use color in a more personal and expressive way to describe what you see and how you feel about what is in front of you?
My new workshop will be focused on redesigning the subject’s colors: it does not mean that we need to change colors drastically, but we can change or adjust the color temperature, saturation, and hue, for example. I like to say that how you use colors and how you mix them will identify your work, so I would like to expand your creative mind and encourage you to use new color combinations and avoid weak, muddy, and flat compositions.
Amsterdam is known for its famous scenic canals, amazing architecture, and beautiful flower market with hundreds of tulips and bikes standing next to the canals everywhere. It’s an inspiring place for any visual artist and I have been there many times so I will use some of my photos for this workshop.
I will start with an explanation of color mixing and color temperature. I will paint six different tulips, the iconic flower from Amsterdam: the first three will show a tulip painted with cool shades against warm backgrounds. The last three tulips will be painted with warm shades against cool backgrounds.
An explanation about staining colors, lifting out technique, and the wetness of the paper is also included. Please, in case you want to repeat the same lifting-out exercises, do not forget to bring a flat synthetic brush (1/2”).
I will show different color combinations for the foreground and background.
I might add a few colors to my traditional palette and share them with all participants.
I want to explore the temperature change and how it affects the perception of depth: we can’t judge a color out of context. How it looks in your palette is not the way it will look in your painting. The perception of color is affected by the color of the area adjacent to it.
The last part of the workshop will be dedicated to painting a street scene from Amsterdam: flowers, bikes, the canals, and the local atmosphere will be included in this demo. I want to change the reference colors and show different options for color mixing: it’s a new approach to color mixing never been shown before in my workshops.
I will upload a couple of photos taken in Amsterdam to my website and share them with all participants so you in case you want can use them as references or just save them for the future.
