“Every sunset is a journey, a journey to remember the memories of the past.” M.M. Ildan.
From the beautiful shades of blue and gray to the brilliant hues of oranges and yellows, sunsets have inspired painters for centuries so my new workshop is focused on capturing the perfect balance between the vibrant colors of the sunset sky and the darker tones of the foreground.
The atmospheric conditions influence the intensity and range of colors we witness during sunsets: for example, the winter sunsets are more vivid because the air is significantly cleaner, humidity is lower and a crisper vision of the sunset is enabled.
What does it mean? It means that there is no ready formula for painting sunsets (there are different sunsets according to the local atmosphere, local weather, whether it’s a tropical country or not, etc) but we can create visually stunning sunset compositions by paying attention to how we arrange the elements in the painting.
I will start the workshop with a couple of quick sketches about the sunset subject: the correct brush strokes, the sense of light and depth when the sun is setting down, the importance of the leading lines, the silhouettes suggestion, the horizontal and vertical brush strokes, the layers interplay and the glazing technique for pushing the background down. The sketches will be sent to all participants one day before the first session.
While the golden hour steals the show, we will also pay attention to the deep and rich blues that are also part of the sunset color spectrum so I will paint different sunset compositions: a Paris bridge during wintertime, a view from Amsterdam in the fall season, a boat composition from Kinsale (Ireland, summer season), another boat composition from Brittany, France (summer season) and a small village building from Norfolk, England (fall season).
The water reflections can add depth and symmetry to the sunset compositions and they are also a way to double the impact of the vibrant sky above so let’s also depict the Irish and French seascapes together.
Sunsets have a calming power for me, they bring hope for a better tomorrow so let’s explore and capture the golden light together!
**It’s a brand-new workshop! Due to my time availability it won’t be repeated.
