"Color creates, enhances, changes, reveals and establishes the mood of the painting.” K. Holland
As this is the only workshop about mixing colors on paper (landscapes), I want to add more workshop topics related to mixing greens: I want to show, for the first time, how I use a black and white photo and create my green mixings and an appealing value change. In my opinion, if you want to grow as an artist you can’t operate on autopilot, you need to take more risks, develop your color combinations, and explore more and more possibilities.
I want to start the workshop with 4 different wet-on-wet small landscape paintings. We will mix greens on the paper together and explore the degrees of wetness.
Many artists have asked me how I decide how much pigment and water I will use, or what is the right brush pressure on the paper so my answer is: it’s everything about mixing pigments on the paper (instead of spending a lot of time mixing colors on the palette). It’s about timing, again, and it’s about playing with the unpredictability.
This workshop is about mixing colors, and greens, a loose and intuitive approach to landscape painting, the wetness of the paper, lifting out techniques, playing with values, understanding your colors, and how to achieve a powerful composition by working with soft edges.
Have you ever noticed that I mix the greens on the paper (not on my palette)? If not, it's your chance to see it!
- Do you know how to blend greens on the wet paper?
- Do you know how to manipulate the mood of your landscape by working with color and tone?
- Do you know how to turn your landscape drawing into three-dimensional forms?
- How can you mix fresh and vibrant greens by combining colors?
- Do you know how to take some artistic license and change the shades of green that suit the mood you are after?
