“Nature is not only all visible…it also includes the inner pictures of the soul“
E Munch.
The holiday season is fast approaching, and it’s time to embrace winter, so my new workshop will focus on a subject suggested by many artists: the evergreens and the winter greenery.
Evergreen means a tree remains “green forever” (or as long as it is living). It is also identified as a sign of endurance through the winter.
Among the many choices, the most commonly planted evergreens are cypress, pine, cedar, spruce, and juniper but many varieties come in a range of silvers or gold so we are not talking about flat shades of green only: for example, the foliage of the blue spruce tends to be more bluish in color.
I want to show different types of evergreens so I will paint 9 quick small demos (a branch with foliage) and each demo will show a different evergreen shape, green mixing, and brush stroke: White Pine, Blue Spruce, Burford Holly, Eucalyptus, Boxwood, Magnolia Leaves, Bay Leaves, Fraser Fir and Western Juniper. More evergreens can be added in the first or the second session.
As we will talk about green mixing, leaf shape, and the winter greenery composition, I want to show a quick monochromatic sketch about leaves overlapping and how to enhance the green depth in your compositions.
The last and main demo will be a luscious green wreath with all the evergreen branches we painted before (the 9 quick demos). Of course, you do not need to paint a wreath, you are welcome to paint a small composition with different shades of green and include different evergreens. The purpose of this workshop is to show you how to paint greens with confidence.
This workshop is unique, I have never taught a workshop about evergreens and leaves and it won't be repeated so join my new art journey, and let's celebrate the holiday spirit together!
