“Art should be like a holiday: something to give a man the opportunity to see things differently and to change his point of view." (Paul Klee)
The holiday season is fast approaching, and it’s time to embrace winter, so my new workshop will focus on a subject suggested by many artists: mistletoe hangings, tree shapes, and winter evergreens.
Evergreen means a tree remains “green forever” (or as long as it is living). It is also identified as a sign of endurance through the winter.
The first demo will be about the conical or pyramidal tree shapes:we will explore different types of spruce, pine, and fir. There are different types of evergreen trees; each shape has a specific brush stroke, so I will demonstrate 8 (eight) different tree shapes.
Mistletoe is an essential holiday evergreen, known for its distinctive forked branches and symmetrical leaves. The second demo will focus on color theory and mixing to render the rich variety of greens found within a single bunch — moving beyond basic green to create dimension and life.
The third demo will be a holiday still life featuring soft red and white roses nestled among seasonal greenery and bright Holly berries. You will learn the principles of composition, how to visually connect the soft elegance of flowers with the strong structure of evergreens, and how to render the reflective surfaces of a China or Gold vase.
What else can we paint to celebrate the holiday season? We tackle the challenge of metallic surfaces by painting Bells, timeless symbols of joy and hope. This final demo focuses on creating believable highlights and reflections on the metallic surfaces, alongside mastering the fluid, dimensional folds of a festive Red Ribbon Bow, framed by delicate evergreen sprigs.
As you can see, the workshop is focused on holiday subjects with an emphasis on how to represent different shades of greens in different scales (sometimes a tree, sometimes a branch only). You can also use parts of my demos to make your holiday cards (evergreens, red flowers, bells, mistletoe, berries, etc).
