“Art is a line around your thoughts” G. Klimt.
I spent part of the Summer in Loire Valley, France. It’s a wonderful part of France, known as the Garden of France with rolling hills covered by vineyards, fairytale castles, beautiful fields with hay bales on warm and bright summer days, many charming gates and doorways, historic towns, to mention a few things so yes, my new workshop will be focused on painting the stunning french countryside.
This time I want to explore the fascinating world of textures: I will use some of my references (I took more than 2000 photos in France) and paint the stone walls. I will use rough paper sometimes, and show different brushes and techniques.
The hay bales left in fields is a different subject, it’s amazing how we can explore the effects of sunshine and sunrise when we see the projected hay bales shadows. The hay bales represent the culmination of hard work and the cycle of nature. When we see them all together we can better understand the rules of perspective: it is an excellent subject to explore the principles of composition, perspective, shape repetition, and the planes of the landscape.
Another subject that I want to explore in this workshop is the small castle doorways and gates. I have been attracted by Gates since the beginning of my life as an artist. Why? It’s an excellent opportunity to create a visual barrier between background and foreground and to practice the calligraphic brush strokes as the gates are represented by lines (straight, curved, etc). It‘s also an important subject to understand the source of light and the projected cast shadows. Again, we will talk about perspective during this workshop topic.
What else? I will share some extra Loire Valley photos with you (you will receive a private link with additional references) and I will include one flower in the first session or second session. I could not teach a workshop about my summer in France without painting a flower. Which flower? I will paint a local Iris or Rose.
So join my next painting journey! It will be a different workshop with a lot of information about textures, landscapes, architectural elements flowers, gardens, and…France!
