“We see nothing till we truly understand it." (J. Constable)
Waterfalls, rivers, and moving water impart life to any landscape. They are a fantastic subject to paint, particularly as a study of color, edges, and movement so my new workshop is focused on painting moving water and capturing the transparency and highlights as the water crashes down through the rocks.
Painting the illusion of water in motion is about preserving the white of the paper first and capturing the general flow of water. It does not matter if it’s a small cascade or a huge waterfall: if the water tumbles over the edge of a precipice, for example, it entraps air and creates a mass of white water. The mass of water is three-dimensional and it needs to be modeled with value.
The flow capture is dynamic and it’s rarely a smooth flow: there are some large, scattered rocks blocking the moving water so we need to pay attention to the colors of the rocks beneath, or any cast shadows from surrounding greens or rocks.
The first demo or exercise of this workshop will be a quick monochromatic waterfall sketch: we will focus on the water values, flow direction, and how to avoid a rigid waterfall. I will also paint a few rocks as a preliminary study for the main demos.
The second will be a stream of water flowing through rocks and I will show how to break the water down into simple shapes. We will talk about the difference between calm and turbulent water and how it affects the flow direction.
The third demo will be a waterfall: we will depict the value and color of turbulent water as the value and color of waterfalls. The waterfall is three-dimensional so we can’t simply leave the white paper.
It’s a brand new workshop, I have never taught a workshop about moving water and it won’t be repeated due to my time availability so come and join my new journey through the amazing world of moving water!
