“It’s the contrast of light and dark that design happens” H.V.Wyk
I want to explore how to add powerful darks to the background without outlining the focal point: any dark brush stroke can guide the viewer’s eyes and give some support to the whole composition.
We will depict the rose shape: I will paint roses in different positions and explain my process of simplifying any flower shape. A different dark background will be added to each single flower demo.
I want to map and explain what I call calligraphic elements in one of my demos (a composition with roses): dots, lines, stems, brush marks, leaf suggestion, texture, direction, splattering, focal point, and depth enhancement will be shown in the same demo.
The final demo will be wild roses with a Delft piece: another dark background will be explored and we will talk about how to connect the Delft piece pattern with the background without outlining all elements.
This workshop was planned to clear one more frequent question in my workshops: how to avoid muddy dark tones and how to work with darks to create a visual path for the viewer! As usual, this workshop won’t be repeated.
- Do you know how to enhance the contrast by using the correct water-to-pigment ratio?
- Do you tend to struggle with the dark background in watercolor?
- Do you know how to use pigment saturation to create a sense of depth?
- Would you like to use vibrant and colorful darks in your watercolors?
- Do you know how to add darks to support your watercolor compositions?
- Do you know how to edit the flower shapes? Would you like to know everything about the rose's shape?
