“The substance of painting is light.” Andre Derain.
This is a workshop about glass, still life, and flowers, but this time, I want to go further: I want to portray the different substances or mixtures that can be seen through transparent glass, so my new workshop is focused on painting the magical effects of light refraction.
Light refraction happens when light changes direction or bends when it moves from one material to another. So, if we try to paint an olive oil bottle and a glass of water, we will need to understand how the light is going to hit the water or the olive oil. It’s something related to the density and color of the substance (water) or the mixture (olive oil).
Painting glass in watercolor so that it looks like transparent glass may seem a bit complicated but it’s not, it’s just a matter of following the intense highlights and darks on the glass which really will make them come to life: we will follow the light path and reproduce a few of the major reflections.
I will paint five different glass containers, each one filled with a different substance or mixture:
Four challenging demos will be painted in the first session. One demo will be painted in the second session. (the mentoring session)
We will explore the effects of light refraction, how to paint a background if we add a glass in the foreground, the different densities, and how to portray them. Some flowers will be added(the Turkish tea demo), some grapes(the wine demo) and some tomatoes(the olive oil) so it is also a workshop about flowers, fruits, and compositional choices for still life.
It’s a brand new workshop, there’s no episode 2 or 3 and due to my time availability it won’t be repeated so come and join my new journey through the magic world of light refraction!

- A small transparent vase with a single flower: the Clean Water demo;
- A small tulip shape transparent glass with Tea (the Turkish glass) with roses or another flower;
- A glass of Red Wine with a few grapes;
- A glass of Aperol with orange slices, the iconic Italian drink;
- A transparent Olive Oil bottle with tomatoes, a perfect Italian still life.
